Christmas markets are an Advent tradition that can be traced back to the 15th century. One of the most famous and well-known is the Christkindle Markt in Munich. Some of my other favorites include those in Nürnberg, Augsburg, Rothenburg, Frankfurt, and Dresden. Each region throughout Germany has its own Christmas market, and everyone is very proud and happy to have one close by.
There is a unique feeling when walking through these special pre-Christmas markets, listening to the wonderful music and songs, and inhaling the greatest flavors and smells from the food stands spread all over. Each of these markets offers unique foods and flavors that are very popular and similar to each other, but still distinct from those in other locations, cities, and countries.
Most Christmas markets are open from late November to the end of December. The largest one is in Vienna, Austria, known for its unique culinary treasures and located in the heart of Vienna at the historic city hall.
One of the most distinguished and unique flavors comes from gingerbread. In my opinion, this is the most important and desired item when visiting a Christmas market.

The Christmas Market has something very special to share, explore, and awaken during this magical time of the year. Some of the recipes are such closely guarded secrets that they are never shared outside of the family. It took me over 20 years to reproduce one of my favorite gingerbreads that I first tasted in my childhood. I never gave up on it and have come very close, if not exactly similar, to the original. I call it the original and unique Transylvanian Saxons Gingerbread from Frau Schlosser (Miss Schlosser) in Mediasch (Mediaș).
Of course, there is much more to explore at a Christmas market: shows, specialty seasonal foods, wine and beers, and lots of gift shops from the region. The most well-known is the Glühwein, which is a spiced red wine served hot in a unique glass or stone pitcher. Because of the cold weather, this is definitely the best option.
Each year, I plan a Christmas tour to Germany. There will be 8 places on this tour, so if you are interested, make sure to reserve your spot as soon as possible! All tours I offer are micro-specialty exquisite tours, where food & wine, gastronomical explorations, and history are given prestigious respect. Check out the Tour Page.
